CAPACITY DEVELOPMENT FOR TEACHERS

BY DANIEL OLUKAYODE JACOBS BEng
President Center for Creative Youth International Ministries

OBJECTIVES
1. To help teachers develop leadership skills.
2. To expose teachers to a life of personal responsibility.
3. To help them cultivate a life of reading, observations, reasoning and challenging their mind for great exploit in life.
4. To help them develop communication, emotional intelligence and inter personal skills needed to train up their pupils.

Introduction

- According to J. C Maxwell, “Everything rises and falls on leadership.” The effectiveness of your work will never rise above your ability to lead and influence others.
- Your leadership skills determine the level of your success – and the success of those who work around you.
- Leadership is not an exclusive club for those who were “born with it.”
- This training supplies the leadership principles but you must supply the desire, commitment and faith.
- Leadership is developed, not discovered. Teachers would certainly perform well, if they develop leadership capacities.

Section 1.
Creative ways to motivate others
1. Know where your students’ motivation comes from.
- Teachers must be fully aware of what really motivates them and ensure that it is nurtured.
- What is it that gets them motivated? What inspires them to action? What kind of environment motivates them?

2. Teach Self Discipline.
- Discipline is remembering what you want. – David Campbell.
- The truth is that we don’t “have” self – discipline, we use self – discipline.
- This is putting your body under, in other to get things done cheaply.
- Enlightened teachers get more out of their students because they know that each of their students already has everything it takes to be successful – self – discipline.

3. Tune in before you Turn On.
- Don’t tell people how to do things, tell them what to do and let them surprise you with their results. – George S. Patton.
- You can’t motivate a student who can’t hear you.
- If what you’re saying is bouncing off their psychological armour, it makes little difference how good you are at saying it. You are not being heard.
- Your students have to hear you to be moved by you.
- The first rule in any kind of coaching is that the coach has to engage in deep listening.
- Which means that the coach must relate on the context in which the “other” is reasoning – they must ‘tune in’ to where the other is coming from.

4. Avoid Criticizing Upper Management.
- Two things are bad for the heart – running uphill and running down people. – Bernard Gimbel.
- A true leader has the courage to represent upper management, not run it down.
- A true leader never uses the word “they” to refer to senior officials in the school.
- A true leader says “we”.

5. Do the One thing.
- Management is doing things right; leadership is doing the right things. – Peter Drucker
- You can’t motivate others if you are not doing the right things.
- And to keep yourself in a relaxed and centred state, it’s important for you to not be scattered, distracted, or spread thin.

6. Get input from your students.
- I not only use all the brain I have, but all I can borrow. – Woodrow Wilson.
- Good leaders continue to seek creative input from their direct reports.
- The quality of our motivational skill is directly related to the quality of our questions.

7. Accelerate Change
- Every organization must be prepared to abandon everything it does to survive in the future. – Peter Drucker.
- It is important to know the psychological reaction to change in your employees and how it follows a predictable cycle.
- Your employees pass through these four stages in the cycle, and you can learn how to manage this passage:

- The Change Cycle
i. Objection: “This can’t be good.”
ii. Reduced Consciousness: “I really don’t want to deal with this.”
iii. Exploration: “How can I make this change work for me?”
iv. Buy – in: “I have figured out how I can make this work for me and for others.”

- Sometimes the first three stages in the cycle take a long, long time for your people to pass through.
- Productivity and morale can take a dizzying dip as employees resist change.
- It is human nature to resist change. We all do it.

Laws of personal success.

Principles are well defined rules that govern the operation of a particular thing or event. When these principles become universal, they become a law.

1. Law of difference
- Difference decides who pursues your wisdom.
- Difference decides what you pursue.
- Problems are seeds for reward.
- Problem is an opportunity for significance and recognition.
- The problem you sold decides your rewards.
- Discern your difference from others.
- Your success is decided by your difference.

2. The law of the mind.
- If you can succeed in your mind, you can succeed in whatever you do.
- Your mind is more important than every other thing in the world.
- Your mind needs a goal or focus.
- Your mind needs instruction.
- Your mind is given to you to serve you.
- God gave you a mouth to tame your mouth.
- Your mind will always need an example to follow.
- Your mind will always be hungry for knowledge.
- Your mind flourishes with movement, light and sound.
- Your mind is activated with pictures.
- It is important to spice up your mind with self – talk or meditation.
- Read mind washing psalms aloud to yourself. Psalm 119, Psalm 91, Psalm 37, Psalm 27
- The secret of strength is not just determination, but the absorption of scriptural truth.

3. The Law of Recognition.
- Everything you want is around you, but waiting for your recognition.
- All you need is inside you, only waiting for you to recognize it.
- Everything you desire is close to you, waiting for your recognition.
- A mentor is knowledgeable of your weakness as well as your strength.
- God hides something you need in someone

4. The law of two (Relationship)
- Two are necessary for multiplication.
- Satan did not show up in the garden until Eve showed up.
- Hell’s greatest fear is the relationship of a protégé with his mentor.
- There is somebody who sees in you what you do not see.
- The difference in seasons is one man.
- The difference between poverty and prosperity is one man.
- You are only four people away from anyone you desire to meet.
- You are only one person away from your season.

5. The law of place.
- God made places before he made people.
- You do not belong everywhere, you belong somewhere.
- Every seed contains an invisible assignment.
- You do not design assignment, you discover it.
- Your assignment is either to a person or a group of people.
- Your assignment is geographical.
- Honour reveals the place of your assignment.
- There is a place you actually belong.
- Your genius will appear when you are properly rooted in your place.
- When you are where you belong, you do not have formidable rivals.
- When you are where you are suppose to be, divine prosperity waits for you there.
- Provision confirms that you are where you are supposed to be.

6. The Law of Honour.
- Your future is determined by the person you have chosen to honour.
- Listening is the seed for learning.
- Honour is the seed for access.
- Knowledge is the seed for change.
- Adaptation is the proof of honour.
- All blessings come through a chain of authority. Who you honour determines what flows in you.
- If you fail or succeed in life, it is because of a person you have chosen to honour.
- Honour protects, corrects, and submits, yields, willing to change.
- The little good things you do for others is proof of honour.

8. The Law of the seed.
- Words are the seed for feeling.
- What you seed determines what you harvest.
- Forgiveness is the seed for relationship.
- Gratitude is the seed for more.
- What you bring first determines what you sustain.
- Every seed must be wrapped with an expectation.
- Your seed wrapped with an expectation can create your desired harvest.
- Faith decides what you sow while expectation decides what you reap.
- I cannot change your life until I change who you trust.
- You are nobody until someone hates you. Mockery is the seed that enemies sow into you for God to speedily make you.
