INTRODUCTION
Proverbs means wise saying and wise sayings are the same as wisdom. They are the sayings that makes one wise. The purpose for wisdom is to produce wise people who have the elements of living comfortably at all times. The book of Proverbs is to teach us to live comfortable.
DEFINITION OF WISDOM
To be wise means to have good judgment based on knowledge and experience. Wisdom therefore is the ability given by God to know what to do when to do it and how to do it, and obtain the desired result all this talks about being able to do what some others have not been able to do before or doing better than somebody has done before.

I. TO DISTINGUISH BETWEEN GOOD AND EVIL
Good means things or thoughts that gives one joy and comfort.
Evil means anything or thought or event, deed that are unpleasant i.e. takes away joy, happiness and comfort from us.
(Proverbs 1:10-16)
Don’t follow the idea of sinners, with the wisdom of God you will be able to choose your friends. If you follow the way of God there is joy in life.
II RIGHTEOUSNESS
TO TEACH TO KNOW RIGHTEOUNESS AND SIN
Righteousness is being in the right relationship with God.}
Sin on the other hand is being disobedience against God. } Prov.14:34
III TO GIVE UNDERSTANDING BETWEEN TRUTH AND FALSEHOOD
TRUTH is the statement of reality or occurrence. Spiritually there may not be back up facts or evidences in the immediate to prove the evidence but with time, the truth appears.
Falsehood is the statement of unreal not having proves or evidences to show its occurrence. It is also the state of fakeness.
IV TO GIVE US INSIGHT INTO THE SPIRITUAL (I.E. REVELATION OF THE SPIRIT)
INSIGHT REVELATION:- is understanding given by the spirit of God concerning a situation. (Ps.119:130; Prov.13:15)
Whenever you are hopeless God will give you understanding.
V TO GIVE MANKIND KNOWLEDGE OF THE LIMITEDNESS OF HIS THOUGHT (NATURE)
Man cannot do without God. Human beings are controlled and limited in their abilities by the physical (i.e. man is limited on his senses. (JOB 4:2)
VI TO MAKE MAN TO BE DEPENDENT ONLY ON GOD
The need of every man is to get Success, Joy, Peace, Comfort, but no man can get this by himself except through God. (Proverbs 4:7)
As can be seen, the book of Proverbs is meant to give sound, moral and spiritual foundation to man and a good relationship with God and with fellow men.
LESSON 2
PROVERBS IN THE NEW TESTAMENT
Proverbs were not only used in the Old Testament, they were used by the Apostles also. And they will continue to be used till Jesus comes. The proverbs in the New Testament are either direct quotations from the Old Testament or they are similar to them. Jesus used Proverbs and Parables Matthew 13.

Anywhere there is hatred there will be trouble. Make yourself an embodiment of love. God cannot be present where there is no love. Proverbs 11:31; I Peter 4:18
Both the righteous and the sinners shall be recompensed (rewarded) Proverbs 17:13,27; Romans 12:17; James 1:19
If you talk too much you are prone to tell lies. Talk very little. Maintain an atmosphere of friendliness. Don’t hold offence in your hearts. Ask God for forgiveness. Prov.20; 1 John 1:8
You should be able to tell whether to go to heaven or go to hell. If we say we have no sin we deceive ourselves. Give no room to satan. Prov.22:8; 2 Corinthians 9:7
It is what you sow that you reap. It is what purpose in your heart that you reap if you want God to forgive you. Prov.25:21-22; Rom.12:20
LESSON 3
HOW TO GET WISDOM
Wisdom is not inherited, it is not bought and it is not learnt in school, wisdom is a gift received from God. Material things are inherited but wisdom is not.
1. WISDOM IS ACQUIRED OR RECEIVED FROM GOD
1 TIMOTHY 1:17
God is the only person that possesses wisdom and only He can give. Rom.16:27; James 1:5
If you need wisdom ask God and he will give it to you. Ps. 111.10. Seek and knock for it Prov.44:7, Eph.1:16-17, Prov.25:2,
Dan 2, Prov.2:4.
Job 28:28
It is only when you fear (respect) God that you get wisdom. You respect God by accepting Him as your saviour to come and dwell in you. (Prov. 9:10)
2. WISDOM IS ACQUIRED FROM JESUS
You can’t separate Jesus from God. 1 Cor.1:24,30
Jesus is made the wisdom of God so if receive him you get wisdom. Col.2:3; Jude 25

THE BENEFIT OF WISDOM
THE GAIN OR ADVANTAGES OF WISDOM.
Wisdom is the principal thing, it is impossible to live a successful
lives. Proverbs 3:2-16

1. Wisdom makes our days long. Eph.3:16-17; Gen.3:22; Rev.22:14
2. Wisdom gives us eternal life:- with which we can discern many things. (Prov.3:16; Prov.4:8; Prov.17:2
Don’t bring shame to your parents do things that will bring joy to your parents.
3. Wisdom gives honour to man:- when you invest wisdom, you are honourable.
The state of your heart makes you happy. Prov.3:17
4. Wisdom gives us Satisfaction (Prov. 3:17)
5. Wisdom gives us wealth (Prov.3:17; 2Corinthians 5:17)
When you are with God, you will sleep peaceful.
6. Wisdom gives us peace:- if you have God with you, no one can harm you.
We have to redefine our relationship with God. (Prov.3:22; 4:9)

THE NEED FOR WISDOM
THE IMPORTANCE OF WISDOM
1. It is the principal thing. Prov. 4:7
Wisdom is the overall thing in our Christian life. 2 Tim.2:9
2. Wisdom is the foundation of God.
Have a reason for whatever you want to do
WHY WE NEED WISDOM
1. It is a commandment for life:-
You need wisdom to have comfort. Matt.10:16
2. It is strength for living:- as such you need wisdom to live well. Eccl.7:19; Isaiah 30:21
Maintain focus in wisdom and God will not leave you. Keep focus on God. He will never leave you. Never give up.
3. Wisdom is the characteristic of God:- It is part of God. Ps.104:24
You need wisdom because it is in God and we are made in His image Prov. 3:19
God made the earth by wisdom so we also need wisdom to make things to exist (created) Prov.8:23-30
Don’t do anything because some one else is doing it. Rom.11:23
Absence of God leads to unbelief
4. We need wisdom to keep us in life. Isaiah 11:2
Wisdom helped Jesus to excel. Matt.13:54; Lk.2:40, 52

Wisdom from God can make a way for you in every confusion. It brings about witty invention.

Nehemiah was concerned with the things of God and was given wisdom by God.
Think about the things of God more than your things.
