 — ROOTED AND BUILT UP

A tree survives difficult seasons because of what cannot be seen—its roots. When the wind blows, the storm comes, and the environment becomes hostile, the strength of the tree is determined by the depth of its roots. In the same way, our visible Christian life is sustained by an invisible relationship with God. What people see in our character, conduct, faith and fruitfulness is largely a reflection of what has been happening beneath the surface. You cannot sustain great spiritual fruit with shallow spiritual roots.

Paul admonishes us in Colossians 2:6–7 to walk in Christ, “rooted and built up in him, and established in the faith.” Notice that being rooted comes before being built up. God wants to establish us deeply in Christ before He entrusts us with greater levels of influence. Our roots must not primarily be in personalities, denominations, titles, emotions, achievements or circumstances. People may change, systems may fail, emotions may fluctuate and circumstances may shift, but Christ remains the sure foundation. When Christ is your root, your faith does not collapse simply because life becomes difficult.

Roots are also the channels through which a tree receives nourishment. Spiritually, we are nourished through God's Word, prayer, worship, fellowship and obedience. Every time you open Scripture with a hungry heart, you are sending your roots deeper. Every time you pray when you don't feel like praying, you are strengthening your spiritual foundation. Every time you obey God even when obedience is inconvenient, you are developing spiritual depth. Never underestimate the quiet things you do with God when nobody is watching. Those hidden moments may be producing the strength that will sustain you publicly tomorrow.

Being built up also reminds us that spiritual maturity is a process. God does not build a strong believer overnight. He builds us through seasons, challenges, corrections, waiting, learning and obedience. Sometimes, what feels like delay is actually development. Some difficult seasons are not designed to destroy you but to deepen you. God may allow your roots to grow before He allows your branches to spread. Therefore, don't become frustrated because your progress is not yet visible. Roots grow in hidden places before fruit appears in visible places. Trust God's process.

Today, become more concerned about depth than appearance. It is possible to look impressive spiritually while remaining shallow internally. But when your roots are deep in Christ, your life can withstand storms without losing its identity. Psalm 1 describes the rooted person as a tree planted by streams of water—fruitful in season, whose leaf does not wither. That is God's desire for you: not a life that is fruitful only when circumstances are favourable, but a life that remains fruitful because its source is Christ.

Beloved, go deeper! Don't merely seek what God can give you; seek to know the God who gives. Don't build your faith only on what you feel; build it on what God has said. Don't allow temporary storms to uproot permanent convictions. Let your roots go deeper into Christ, your knowledge of His Word, your prayer life, your obedience and your fellowship with Him. When your roots are deep, your storms will not define you, and when your foundation is Christ, your future can carry the weight of God's purpose.

Prayer:
Father, help me to be deeply rooted and firmly established in Christ. Take me beyond shallow faith into genuine spiritual depth. Strengthen my roots through Your Word, prayer, worship and obedience. When storms come, keep me standing. When seasons change, keep me fruitful. Build my character, strengthen my faith and make my life a testimony of Your grace. In Jesus' name, Amen.
